HIFU Center

The non-invasive interventional MR-HIFU procedure offers the possibility of using high-energy focused ultrasound (HIFU) to heat tissue deep within the patient without damaging the surrounding tissue. This HIFU therapy is carried out within an MRI scanner, which makes it possible to plan and monitor the therapy on MRI images. For example, the tissue temperature during HIFU therapy is monitored on MRI images, which makes this therapy method very safe. The Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at Cologne University Hospital is one of the world's leading HIFU centers and offers this procedure for a wide range of indications, such as the treatment of prostate cancer, uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, desmoid tumors and pain therapy for bone metastases. In addition to clinical application, HIFU therapy is the subject of research in the Experimental Imaging and Image-guided Therapy group in order to expand the range of applications of this therapy method.
