Focused ultrasound (HIFU)
The non-invasive interventional MR-HIFU procedure offers the possibility of using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to heat tissue deep within the patient without damaging the surrounding tissue. This HIFU therapy is performed within an MRI scanner, which makes it possible to plan the therapy on MR images. During HIFU therapy, the tissue temperature can also be monitored on MR images, which makes this therapy very safe. The radiology in Cologne is one of the world's leading HIFU centers and offers this procedure for a wide range of indications, such as the treatment of prostate carcinomas, uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, desmoid tumors or pain therapy for bone metastases. In addition to clinical application, HIFU therapy is the subject of research in the Experimental Imaging and Image-guided Therapy group in order to broaden the range of applications.
