MR-HIFU refers to the combination of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with high-energy focused ultrasound waves (high-intensity focused ultrasound, HIFU for short). High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and MRI procedures have been used successfully individually for many years. The combination of both methods has opened up new treatment options, which are partly due to the improved imaging capability of MRI. The ultrasound waves can heat deep tissue inside the body without damaging the tissue layers above, such as the skin. MRI technology can be used to precisely control where the ultrasound waves are focused and exactly which structure is heated, as well as to determine the temperature.
