Diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology

Musculoskeletal imaging focuses on the diagnosis of injuries and diseases of bones, muscles and joints. Traumatological (e.g. bone fractures and torn ligaments), inflammatory (e.g. rheumatism), degenerative (e.g. osteoarthritis) and endocrinological (e.g. osteoporosis) changes to bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons are diagnosed so that they can then be optimally treated. Imaging procedures have the important task of making an exact diagnosis based on the multitude of possible causes of often unspecific pain in the musculoskeletal system, which is the basis for efficient treatment. It is essential to differentiate between specific diagnoses and normal ageing processes.

Imaging procedures

Minimally invasive interventions on the musculoskeletal system:

  • CT-guided interventions:
    • Biopsies
    • Markings
  • Treatment of benign bone and soft tissue tumors
    • Osteoid osteoma by cryoablation
    • Desmoid tumors by cryoablation
  • Treatment of malignant bone tumors
    • Bone metastases through cryoablation
  • Interventions by neuroradiology:
    • Diagnostic-therapeutic injections (e.g. periradicular therapy (PRT))
    • CT myelography

Clinical interdisciplinary case conferences are supervised by our specialist team for musculoskeletal radiology in collaboration with the Departments of Trauma Surgery, Orthopaedics, Infectiology, Oncology, Radiotherapy and Pathology. Examinations on children are carried out in consultation with the Department of Pediatric Radiology within the Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology.
