Transarterial pertiarticular embolisation (TAPE)
Joint embolisation (TAPE) is an innovative, minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of chronic joint pain – for example, in cases of osteoarthritis, frozen shoulder or tendon insertion irritations such as tennis elbow, Achilles tendon pain or heel spurs.
Joint embolisation is particularly suitable for patients:
- who do not respond adequately to conservative treatments such as physiotherapy or painkillers,
- for whom surgery is not (yet) an option,
- or who suffer from persistent pain following joint replacement (TEP).
Under local anaesthesia, a fine catheter is used to specifically reduce blood flow to the areas causing pain. This helps to reduce the transmission of pain signals to the nerves and inflammatory activity, thereby significantly alleviating the pain – without the need for surgery.
The treatment is carried out on an interdisciplinary basis by the departments of Radiology, Vascular Surgery and Orthopaedics and involves a short inpatient stay.
