Key qualification course - Scientific writing using the example of radiology

Head: Priv.-Doz. Dr. Nils Große Hokamp, Prof. Stefan Haneder

Two important types of scientific writing (scientific article and medical doctoral thesis) are taught as teaching content. The focus of the selected examples in this course will be on radiological literature. However, the basic aspects taught can be extrapolated to all disciplines.

In today's medicine and medical research, information from image data, e.g. in the form of radiological examinations, is becoming increasingly important. Data from imaging is processed in countless publications and must therefore be made comprehensible to the reader. Medical students should consolidate and deepen their skills and processes for the preparation and publication of scientific papers at the latest during their doctoral studies. In addition to an (optimal) publication of the scientific doctoral thesis in the form of a scientific article (research paper), there is also the option of writing a medical doctoral thesis. As part of this key qualification course, students should learn and deepen their understanding of the formal structure as well as the linguistic and content-related design of these scientific text forms. Furthermore, these learning contents are to be critically examined using examples from the radiological literature in order to ideally be able to draw positive suggestions for their own work.

Small group seminars (maximum of six to eight participants) with three to four 90-minute sessions by arrangement to impart theoretical knowledge by the course leaders and direct application in short exercises by the students. There is also self-study with homework on the students' own scientific work and/or sample work lasting approx. 14 hours. Evaluation and discussion of the independent work and results during the seminar. A feedback session is planned for the last hour of the seminar.
