Interactive teaching of knowledge and basic procedures in interventional radiology.
Times by individual arrangement.
Interventional radiology, with its multitude of different minimally invasive procedures, has developed into an important pillar in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular and oncological diseases in recent decades. As a special discipline of radiology, it is often an integral part of personalized therapy concepts in the treatment of various disease entities and has many points of contact with other clinical disciplines such as visceral surgery, gastroenterology, vascular surgery, angiology, urology and gynaecology.
In other cases, interventional radiology can act as a problem-solver, using the techniques at its disposal to treat patients in a minimally invasive manner, which may save them a major surgical procedure.
Even as a "non-radiologist", it is therefore important to be familiar with the wide range of interventional radiology procedures so that you can adequately inform your own patients about all the treatment options available to them.
As part of an online seminar "Interventional Radiology" consisting of 5 double hours, students will be given an overview of the wide range of different treatment procedures used in interventional radiology. The aim is to provide students with basic knowledge of the indications and contraindications as well as the techniques and materials used in the various interventional procedures.

- CT interventions (biopsy removal and drainage): Indications, contraindications, access routes, implementation, complications

In the sonography course, we teach students how to perform a complete sonographic examination of the abdominal organs independently. In our hands-on course, the theoretical basics of the current topic are discussed each week at the beginning of the course and demonstrated by our lecturers in the subsequent practical part. The main part of the course is the subsequent learning of practical skills under the supervision of the instructors in small groups of 4-6 participants.
The course takes place every Thursday from 18:00 - 19:30 in the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology (Central Emergency Department). A total of 10 dates per semester are offered.
Course structure:
Week 1: Sonography basics (transducers, "equipment knowledge")
Week 2: Liver ultrasound (anatomy, common benign and malignant tumors)
Week 3: Gallbladder and pancreas (anatomy and common findings)
Week 4: Retroperitoneal vessels and lymph nodes
Week 5: Spleen, kidneys and urinary tract
Week 6: Ultrasound simulator in the hospital Week 6: Sonosimulator in KISS group 1 or free practice
Week 7: Sonosimulator in KISS group 2 or free practice
Week 8: Thyroid gland/ neck
Week 9: Vessels (neck vessels, leg veins/ thrombosis)
Week 10: For free use (e.g. in-depth study, repetition of desired content)

In medicine, the specialization of individual disciplines continues to play a key role. For example, only an endoscopist can precisely determine the local extent of a tumor in the esophagus and only a radiologist can reliably assess lymph node or distant metastases in a CT image.
Over time, it has become clear that an interdisciplinary approach is not only necessary in the treatment of complex diseases, but also leads to an individually improved therapeutic outcome. In oncological tumor therapy, for example, internists, surgeons and radiologists regularly work together in so-called tumor boards, which develop a therapy concept tailored to the individual patient after a joint review of all findings. This always takes into account the current treatment guidelines and the latest medical research findings. At the same time, the exchange between colleagues also ensures an interdisciplinary transfer of knowledge.
The aim of this course is to provide medical students with a practice-oriented insight into interdisciplinary cooperation with regard to the diagnosis and treatment of visceral medical conditions and to convey the complexity of these conditions. Particular attention will be paid to complementary instrumental diagnostics in the form of endoscopic and cross-sectional tomographic diagnostics.
