Pediatric radiology
Our pediatric radiology research group focuses on the improvement and further development of diagnostic imaging in children of all ages. We aim to develop new procedures to continuously improve the care of our youngest patients and to integrate these procedures into everyday clinical practice.
Main research areas
Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI)
OI is a hereditary disease of bone formation. The research group has developed a novel diagnostic system for OI, which has become the new diagnostic standard for this disease and has helped to make the University Hospital of Cologne the leading center for the diagnosis and treatment of OI in Germany. In addition, the now central role of bone density measurement (DEXA) in the diagnosis and follow-up of OI has been established.
Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma is a tumor of the peripheral nervous system and is one of the most common types of cancer in children. The imaging of neuroblastomas is another focus of research and clinical work in pediatric radiology, which is being funded as part of a project by the Society of Pediatric Radiology. This is primarily concerned with the evaluation of MRI findings in the early postoperative stage, but also with new treatment methods such as proton beam therapy.
Drug studies
The effects of various drugs on pediatric diseases are also being researched in pediatric radiology. Currently, for example, the effect of riociguat on pulmonary hypertension, the effect of vericiguat on bone age and health as well as heart failure and the effect of dabrafenib with trametinib in BRAF V600 mutation on bone age determined by MRI.
Other ongoing studies:
- Gendyst study on deep brain stimulation
- APH-19 study on sickle cell anemia
- MRI study on hip joint loading in children with cerebral palsy
