Certifications as a seal of quality
The University Hospital of Cologne is legally obliged to have a quality management system. Quality management ensures that processes run smoothly and that their quality can be continuously improved so that patients and employees are satisfied. Certification is currently still on a voluntary basis.
Consumer expectations of the quality of healthcare services are constantly increasing. We have had selected procedures and services assessed by independent certification bodies so that you can find out about our diagnostic and therapeutic services.
We have listed our certificates below.
Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO)

All clinics and institutes involved in the diagnosis, treatment and research of tumor diseases work together in the CIO at the University Hospital of Cologne. Since 2007, the CIO Cologne has been one of the first cancer centers in Germany to be continuously certified as an Oncological Center of Excellence. This award from German Cancer Aid (DKH ) is given to university cancer centers that can demonstrate outstanding care and research in oncology. In addition, the CIO Cologne also meets the technical requirements of the German Cancer Society (DKG ) every year and, with over 20 certified cancer centers, is one of the most comprehensively certified centers in Germany. In 2018, four university hospitals joined forces in the CIO to form a joint cancer center, the CIO Aachen Bonn Cologne Düsseldorf. This network, which is unique in Germany, treats more than 100,000 people who are diagnosed with cancer every year in the densely populated region of North Rhine-Westphalia. In April 2019, the four-location CIO also received the DKH's "Oncological Center of Excellence" award.
Focus Center Cardiovascular Imaging
Since March 2015, our institute has been certified as a German Radiological Society (DRG) focus center for cardiovascular imaging.
The establishment of DRG centers and DRG focus centers for cardiovascular imaging is intended to take account of the fact that highly specialized diagnostics only provide the best long-term benefit for patients if the diagnostics are embedded in an interdisciplinary team. The criteria for this DRG certification are geared towards providing a reliable professional and personnel basis for radiological cross-sectional imaging diagnostics in a cooperative environment with a high level of expertise in cardiovascular diagnostics and therapy.
The Senology Department of the Institute of Radiology has the following certificates as a member of the Breast Center of the University Hospital of Cologne and main service provider of the Breast Center Cologne/Frechen:
