The compulsory courses in the cross-sectional area of imaging procedures (QB 11) during medical studies include an initial modality-oriented introduction to radiology as part of the main lecture (1st clinical semester), which consists of a 90-minute Wednesday lecture series. An introduction to radiation biology, radiation protection and nuclear medicine is provided in a further 45-minute Friday lecture series this semester. The exact details, topics, dates and lecturers can be found in the lecture plan, which can be found in ILIAS.
In the 3rd clinical semester, the block practical course of QB 11 follows, which consists of organ-oriented small group lessons and is held together with the experts in radiotherapy and nuclear medicine (rotation plans in ILIAS). Here, the practical approach to radiological images is taught and oral image description is practiced. In addition, there is an introductory sonography course that is offered to all students (90 minutes in small groups) as part of the practical training days in the KISS. In addition, third-party funds provided by the eLearning Commission of the Faculty of Medicine have been used to set up a dedicated online teaching and learning platform for students, on which they can work on cases suitable for the courses in self-study.
The last part of radiology teaching takes place in the 5th clinical semester again by means of seminars in small groups (rotation plans in ILIAS). The content of these courses is based on all the content taught in previous modules, knowledge of which is now a prerequisite. Advanced radiology content is taught here - again using case-based eLearning on our online teaching and learning platform. The first day of the block seminar consists of a guided tour of the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at Cologne University Hospital. In addition, vascular models were procured in order to provide more practical experience in the field of interventional radiology.
